25th Reunion of the SERVE Family

What a fantastic event! Fifty fantastic souls came to celebrate, reflect, connect and SERVE.

The Cinema was packed as we heard from our SERVE Family. They spoke about “The Engaged Life– How SERVE Influenced my Life. And, did they share heart, soul and wisdom!
Speakers represented the last quarter century and spoke with eloquence and passion. Speakers included:
1987-1992: Shelley Boomhower, past SERVE Coordinator
1993-1997: Bill Smith
1998- 2002: Jessica Burrill
2003- 2007: Sara Chesbrough
2008-2011: Jasmine Yuris

SERVE TODAY – SERVE is alive and well! Current student leaders, Colleen Twoomey, Dani Racciponi, Tara Robinson, were joined by current SERVE Coordinator, Krista Swahn as they offered highlights of current happenings in SERVE. More information to follow.

A highlight was the awarding of the FIRST SERVE Endowment grants.Nat Kinney of Concept2 {in 2007 they offered the leadership grant for the creation of the endowment} gave two awards to current student leaders. SO exciting to see the endowment working to fuel the capacity of SERVE.

The SERVE Family commanded the biggest table at the Reunion Luncheon. Fun to break bread and see current students connecting with alum.
The afternoon SERVICE project was a bush/tree planting at Laraway Youth and Family Services. Greg Stefanski, Executive Director offered an overview of this amazing organization, and Cornelius, the farm manager oriented us to the tasks at hand. Together, we hauled compost, bark mulch and planted blue berries and elderberries. Kids dove into the work, alum told stories of the good ole SERVE days, parents of students offered much appreciated support, and current student leaders, Katelyn and Lucia, led a powerful reflection session.

So much to reflect upon on this event. Clearly, SERVE has matured. We are firmly past our teens and approach our work with a more mature approach. Conversing with current students allows me to realize that we are beyond programs and projects. The work that emanates from the SERVE Family is about building on a MOVEMENT OF ACTIVE CITIZENS. So many are stepping into community with purpose. Clearly, the deep complexities of social justice opens us up and offers us gifts to more fully understand our world and our role in it.

The SERVE Family's first service project.

We are all a part of the SERVE Family. We are connecting in new ways. The threads that connect us allow us to find the synergy; clearly we are reconnecting and growing. Please help us to grow the SERVE Family and enhance our capacity to engage and make the change.

Namaste.

“I can wholeheartedly say that my time at JSC, and specifically my work with the Center for Service Learning, has been the major influence on my commitment to social justice, volunteering and non-profit work. I only wish I could still go on Break-Away trips!” –JSC, Class of 1996

Spring 2011 SERVE Fri

SERVE Fri Events

So far this year we have gone on three SERVE Fri events, with three very different goals.

On the 28th of January 5 students showed up at Elmore Lake to help set up for the Polar Splash!  This included staking out where the hole would be cut, shoveling some snow, and setting up the National Guard tent that would hopefully keep the shivering swimmers warm.  It was one of the most beautiful days of the month and a great day to be on a frozen lake.  For more information on the event itself check out this link to Dan Schwartz’ article in the Basement Medicine
http://www.jsc.edu/BasementMedicine/Spring11_1/POLARSPLASH.aspx

February 4th was an incredible day with 10 students, countless cats, puppies and a bunch of dogs.  We went to the North Country Animal League in Morrisville where the 10 of us from JSC took part in the volunteer orientation.  Now that we have gone through this orientation we can go back anytime and start helping out immediately.  Whether its walking dogs, washing cat beds, or chasing puppies, it is very important for these animals to gain strong social skills so that they may have a higher chance of finding a home.  I walked a beautiful dog named Sajak and he sure loved getting out of that kennel.  North Country Animal League is a great organization and this was especially great for those of us that have to leave our pets at home while we go away to school.  For more information on NCAL check out their website at http://ncal.com/home

Last Friday, February 11th, four students dedicated their day to some hard work in the bright sun.  We went to the Green Mountain Club headquarters in Waterbury to help dig out some of their trail crew cars.  The amount of snow moved my 4 people was absolutely breathtaking and we resurrected five vans and trucks, all with quite interesting names, from the depth of their winter blues.  They are now ready to gear up for spring and transport their crew and tools to the trailheads.  If you’re an avid outdoor enthusiast in Vermont you may want to think about joining the Green Mountain Club, they do a wonderful job keeping our Long Trail, and many other treasured places, maintained for our enjoyment.  Information can be found at https://www.greenmountainclub.org/ Continue reading
